Free Seminar hosted by Attention Plus Care

HONOLULU (January 13, 2014) – Every five hours in Hawaii, an older adult has a fall injury so severe they must be treated at a hospital. Many never get to go home or regain full independence. To help prevent falls among older adults, Attention Plus Care will host a Fall Prevention seminar on Tuesday, January 28, 2014. Attendees will learn four simple precautions to prevent falls, and try exercises to test their balance. The seminar will run from 9:30am to 11:00am at Lanakila Multi-Purpose Senior Center. The seminar is free, but space is limited. Call 440-9375 for registration.

Eileen Phillips, RN, Client Service Director of Attention Plus Care will lead the seminar. "Far too many seniors are injured each year in Hawaii as a result of falling. As people age, their risk of falling increases significantly, threatening their independence and quality of life," Phillips said. "This seminar is a great opportunity for older adults to learn how to take simple precautions to prevent falls and stay independent."

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, falls among adults 65 and over are not only common, but death rates have risen sharply over the last decade. As a matter of fact, one-in-three older adults will sustain a fall that can lead to a serious injury, and even death. Even falls with minor injuries can seriously affect the quality of life for seniors by inducing a fear of falling, which can lead to social isolation and depression. Typically, falls are due to lower limb weakness, poor balance, or slow reaction time. The most recent data show that in 2011, Hawaii averages 1,990 hospitalizations each year due to falls, and over 5,770 emergency room visits.

Aging in Hawaii is an educational outreach program sponsored by Attention Plus Care, with the mission to provide resources for seniors and their families. Classes are instructed by a Registered Nurse, with a different aging topic each month.
