NATIONAL SENIOR HEALTH & FITNESS DAY
National Movement to Promote a Healthy Lifestyle Among Older Adults
Honolulu, Hawaii (May 2, 2011) - Honolulu seniors are invited to celebrate the 18th annual National Senior Health & Fitness Day on May 25, 2011 from 8am to 11am. An estimated 100,000 seniors from across the country will participate in the largest health promotion event for older Americans. Attention Plus Care and YMCA of Honolulu are hosting the free event at YMCA Central Branch at 401 Atkinson Drive, Honolulu.
The theme for this year is "Make Fitness a Goal for Life!" said Krista Groothuis, Marketing & Sales Manager of Attention Plus Care. "This event is a wonderful opportunity for our seniors to experience a variety of fun exercise classes that are offered in our community. The goal is to encourage seniors to live a healthy lifestyle and incorporate physical activity into their daily routine."
The event will offer fitness classes, blood pressure screenings, healthy aging information, and exhibitors promoting local health programs and services. Participants will have an opportunity to participate in fitness classes such as "Silver&Fit®", "Tai Chi, Moving for Better Balance", and "Zumba Gold®".
Kathy Lohman, Group Exercise Coordinator, Central YMCA of Honolulu explains, "The Silver&Fit® class is designed for non-active to moderately active older adults that focus on increasing flexibility, joint stability, balance, coordination, muscular strength, and cardiovascular endurance. The class is a great way to build strength by using resistance bands and dumbbells. Another fun and exciting exercise program is Zumba Gold®, a Latin inspired fitness class with easy to follow dance steps."
Jerry Punzal, a Certified Instructor says, "Tai Chi, Moving for Better Balance has easy to learn movements to help increase mobility. This program is evidenced based, community translated, and endorsed by the Centers for Disease Control as an intervention for Fall Prevention and Fear of Falling."
