April:

SUPPORT FOR FAMILIES CARING FOR A LOVED ONE WITH ALZHEIMER'S
Educate family caregivers about Alzheimer's disease.

Honolulu, Hawaii Alzheimer's is the most common form of dementia with 5.3 million Americans suffering from the disease.1 In Hawaii, approximately 28,000 people are living with Alzheimer's disease or a related disorder. Of those, about 70% of them are cared for by family and friends in private homes. Attention Plus Care is sponsoring "Alzheimer's Care" workshop scheduled for Wednesday, April 28 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Moiliili Senior Center in Honolulu.

The workshop is an opportunity to educate family caregivers about Alzheimer's disease, enhance caregiving skills, and provide resources available in the community.

Desiree Mizuno, Registered Nurse of Attention Plus Care, who has experience with Alzheimer's patients will lead the class. She will discuss the early warning signs, stages, diagnosis, and treatment options. Her focus will advise caregivers on how to manage family members who demonstrate dementia related behaviors.

"Caring for a loved one with Alzheimer's disease can be overwhelming," Mizuno said. "Caregivers can learn how to deal with difficult behaviors such as aggression, repetition, wandering, and sundowning. Learning these tips can help get your loved one to cooperate more in order to accomplish activities of daily living, such as bathing, dressing, and eating. As well as help maintain their safety."

The Alzheimer's Association, Aloha Chapter will partner with Attention Plus Care to provide information about educational and supportive counseling classes.

"The Alzheimer's Association, Aloha Chapter is pleased to partner with Attention Plus Care to improve the quality of care offered to the nearly 28,000 kupuna living with Alzheimer's disease and other dementias," said Tim Taravella, Aloha Chapter Director of Development. "Programs like this make family caregivers aware of the enormous challenges this disease poses to our community."

Alzheimer's Association aims to increase awareness and improve the care available for those suffering from the disease. The Aloha Chapter offers programs free of charge to the public and rely on the generosity of the community to continue supportive services. Donations can be made online at www.alz.org/hawaii to raise funds for research to cure Alzheimer's and sustain public services.

Class size is at full capacity of 40 people. Attention Plus Care will have a future Alzheimer's class, but has not set a date.
