Caring for a Loved One with Alzheimer's

Alzheimer's is the most common form of dementia, with 1 in 8 older Americans who suffer from the disease.

Honolulu,(June 12, 2012) Alzheimer's is the most common form of dementia, with 1 in 8 older Americans who suffer from the disease.1 Of those with Alzheimer's, eighty percent of care is provided at home by family caregivers. To help family members with care for their loved ones with dementia, Attention Plus Care is hosting "Alzheimer's Care" seminar scheduled for Tuesday, June 26th from 9am to 11am. The seminar will be held at Attention Plus Care located at 1060 Makaloa Street, Suite 1060. The event is free, but space is limited and registration is required: Call 440-9372 to sign up.

The seminar is an opportunity to educate family caregivers about Alzheimer's disease, enhance caregiving skills, and provide resources available in the community.

Eileen Phillips, RN, Client Services Director of Attention Plus Car, who has experience with Alzheimer's patients will lead the class. She will discuss the early warning signs, stages, diagnosis, and treatment options. Her focus will advise caregivers on how to manage dementia related behaviors.

"Caring for a loved one with Alzheimer's disease can be overwhelming," Phillips said. "Caregivers can learn how to deal with difficult behaviors such as aggression, repetition, wandering, and sundowning. Learning these tips can help get your loved one to cooperate more in order to accomplish activities of daily living, such as bathing, dressing, and eating. As well as help ensure their safety."

Alzheimer's Care seminar is part of a series from the Aging in Hawaii community outreach program sponsored by Attention Plus Care. For more information about Attention Plus Care or this event, please call 440-9372 or visit: www.attentionplus.com/events.
