Aging in Hawaii: Free Class on Diabetes Care

Honolulu, Hawaii – Diabetes is a serious chronic disease that is increasing at an alarming rate. In fact, 23.6 million people in the United States have diabetes that represent 7.8% of the total population. From this group, 17.9 million are diagnosed with the disease, and the other 5.7 million are undiagnosed. In the past decade, the number of Type II diabetics in the U.S. nearly doubled. More astounding research found that diabetes was the seventh leading cause of death listed on U.S. death certificates in 2006.1

Complications of diabetes can cause heart disease, blindness, nerve damage, kidney failure, and other problems. Research has found the following:

Attention Plus Care is sponsoring "Diabetes Care" class, scheduled for Thursday, January 28, 2010 from 10 am to 12 pm at Attention Plus Care in Honolulu, 1580 Makaloa Street, Suite 1060. Participants will learn from a Licensed Registered Nurse about treatments and healthy living tips to manage this increasingly common disease. The class will review how diabetes affects blood glucose levels, identify the symptoms of hypo- and hyperglycemia, and discover how to prevent diabetic emergencies. The class is free and open to the public.

"People with diabetes can take steps to control the disease, and lower the risks of complications through treatments and a healthy lifestyle," said Akiko Petko, a Licensed Registered Nurse from Attention Plus Care who will lead the class.
