PERSONAL SAFETY FOR SENIORS
Attention Plus Care to Host Workshop
Honolulu, Hawaii Every year, approximately 700,000 to 3.5 million older Americans are abused, neglected, or exploited.1 Attention Plus Care will host "Personal Safety for Seniors" scheduled for Tuesday, July 27, 2010 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at 1580 Makaloa Street in Honolulu. The workshop, which is free and open to the public, is designed to help elders protect themselves against crime, financial exploitation, and con artists.
Participants will learn how to remain safe in the home and community, and not be a victim of elder abuse. The workshop will consist of two speakers. Merlene Jose, RN of Attention Plus Care will provide tips on personal safety and crime prevention. Guest speaker Scott Spallina of Elder Abuse Unit will discuss how to prevent financial exploitation, identify potential abusers, and warning signs.
"When an elder person experiences crime, such as a robbery, it can cause major emotional, physical and financial trauma. This workshop will help seniors to learn about ways to protect themselves from crime, and reduce their chances of being a victim," said Jose.
"Elder abuse is happening in Hawaii every day, and our seniors have to be more alert than ever to prevent losing their life savings and property. It's important for seniors to identify the warning signs, and be aware of what they can do to protect themselves," said Spallina.
Workshop size is limited and registration is required. To register, participants can call (808) 440-9372.
The workshop is part of a series from the "Aging in Hawaii" community outreach program to assist seniors with aging topics.
