POOR BALANCE CAN LEAD TO FALLS AMONG OLDER ADULTS
Aging in Hawaii: Attention Plus Care Offers Free Workshop on Fall Prevention
Honolulu, Hawaii - More than one-third of people aged 65 and older will fall this year. To help avoid falls among older adults, Attention Plus Care will host "Prevent Falls" workshop scheduled for Tuesday, January 24, 2012. Honolulu seniors are invited to learn how to reduce the risk of falls through safety measures, prevention tips, and balance exercises to improve stability. A Register Nurse will discuss how seniors can maintain their health and independence by learning how to avoid falls. The workshop will run from 8:30am to 10:30am at Moiliili Community Senior Center located at 2535 South King Street in Room 105. The event is free, but reservations are required: Call 440-9375 to sign up.
Eileen Phillips, RN, Client Services Director of Attention Plus Care will lead the workshop. "Poor balance can result in unwanted movement, such as a misstep, a wobble, or tripping. However, to reduce the chances of falling, it is important for older adults to incorporate exercises to help improve balance," said Phillips. "This workshop is a great opportunity for the community to learn exercises that is specifically designed to challenge their balance, and encourage regular physical activity."
One in three adults suffers from falls, ranging from moderate to severe injuries, and even death. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, falls among older adults 65 and over are not only common, but death rates from falls have risen sharply over the last decade. Even falls with minor injuries can seriously affect the quality of life of seniors by inducing a fear of falling, which can lead to social isolation and depression. Seniors with the highest risk for falls are due to lower limb weakness, poor balance, and/or slow reaction time. The CDC states that one of the best methods to prevent falls is exercise, which can improve balance, coordination, muscle strength, and reaction time.
"The workshops have been a great success. We have received an overwhelming response from seniors who are appreciative that we offer our fall prevention workshops, and acknowledges that this is a huge problem that needs more awareness within our community," said Krista Groothuis, Marketing and Sales Manager for Attention Plus Care.
The next Prevent Falls workshop is scheduled for Tuesday, March 27, 2012 at Kahala Nui Retirement Community. For more information about Attention Plus Care or Aging in Hawaii workshops, please call 739-2811 or visit: www.attentionplus.com.
