SENIOR HEALTH DAY FAIR
Health Information & Wellness for Seniors
Honolulu, Hawaii In recognition of National Home Care Month in November, Attention Plus Care is sponsoring Senior Health Day Fair on Saturday, November 7th, 2009 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Windward Mall – Center Court. Entrance to the event is free and open to the public.
The purpose of the event is to provide seniors information to promote active, healthy living through physical fitness, good nutrition and preventative care. The event will also promote health awareness, safety, education, and offer resources and services that are available to the community.
"Our Senior Fair is a wonderful opportunity for the community to meet with a variety of medical practitioners and exhibitors to learn about resources available to promote healthy aging," said Eileen Phillips, Client Services Director of Attention Plus Care and a Licensed Registered Nurse. "The fair will also emphasize ways towards a healthier lifestyle and improving quality of life."
The fair will commence with Hawaiian entertainment by Na Kupuna O Ko'olau, a seniors group of musicians and dancers. The event will feature guest speaker Lieutenant Governor James R. "Duke" Aiona, Jr. "Incorporating more physical activity and nutrition in our lives is fundamental to healthy living," said Lt. Governor Aiona. "It is as easy as going for a walk each day and eating one more serving of a fruit and vegetable. These simple changes can add up to big health benefits so our residents can live longer, healthier lives."
Wilson Kekoa Ho, Chair of the Waimanalo Neighborhood Board will emcee the event.
Managing Director Kirk Caldwell, will deliver a message from Mayor Mufi Hannemann.
Additional expert speakers will address aging issues and preventative care. Key speakers will include Hugo Higa, M.D. from Aesthetic Vision Center to discuss eye diseases that progress with age, and offer treatment recommendations. Eileen Phillips, R.N. from Attention Plus Care will discuss safety precautions to reduce the risk of falls and injuries among seniors. Elaine Colby, M.D. from Trade Winds Family Medicine will discuss management and treatment of osteoporosis. There will also be a fitness demonstration for seniors to introduce "Zumba"; a new fitness program with easy to learn dance steps to the beat of Latin music.
Exhibitors include Aesthetic Vision Center, Trade Winds Family Medicine, Hawaii Family Dental Centers, Walgreens, Straub Family Health Center, YMCA, HandiRide Hawaii, First Hawaiian Bank and Attention Plus Care. Additionally, senior agencies will be on site to provide information and resources that are available to the senior community.
Exhibitors will distribute important health-related information such as: nutrition facts, recipe booklets, diabetes and osteoporosis information, vaccine updates, and vitamins and herbal supplements recommended by doctors.
Participants can receive free blood pressure readings, giveaways, and a chance to win up to $50 in gift certificates courtesy of Walgreens, as well as other prizes.

During the month of November, the National Association for Home Care and Hospice (NAHC) celebrates National Home Care Month to honor the men and women who have dedicated their lives to caring for others. More than 7.5 million Americans receive daily home-delivered health care from nearly one million caregivers.1
Family caregivers are individuals who administer unpaid care to loved ones and friends in the home. Often times, a friend or family member endure emotional, economic and physical hardships associated with assisting in long-term care. More than 92 percent of family caregivers report a major change in their work pattern. Forty-one percent were forced to take a leave of absence, while thirty-one percent reduced their work schedule from full- to part-time in order to care for relatives.2
