Aging in Hawaii: Free Class on Stress Reduction for the family caregiver.

Honolulu, Hawaii – Family caregivers take on a wide array of responsibilities by providing care for a relative, while maintaining a full-time job and raising children. Caregiving can be physically and emotionally overwhelming, and it's important for caregivers to create a balance between their well-being and caring for others.

Attention Plus Care is offering "Stress Reduction for Family Caregivers" scheduled for Wednesday, February 24, 2010 from 3pm to 5pm at Makiki Christian Church, 829 Pensacola Street. The class is an opportunity for family caregivers to manage stress, prevent burnout, locate helpful resources, and stay healthy while caring for a loved one.

A licensed Registered Nurse from Attention Plus Care, Aimee Villarmia will lead the class.

"Caregivers sacrifice so much of themselves and often think their responsibility is only to their loved one, and not to themselves," said Villarmia. "It is important for caregivers to recognize and not ignore the physical and emotional symptoms which may impact their health and well being. Caregivers need to guard against burnout and manage stress so they can continue their role as a caregiver."

From a recent study, a staggering 65.7 million - almost one-third of the U.S. population consist of family caregivers who provide unpaid care to a loved one. Based on Caregiving in the U.S.¹, caregivers spend on average 20.4 hours per week providing care, and assist in tasks such as transportation, housework, shopping, preparing meals, managing finances, and medications.

According to the study, the health of caregivers may be affected and are vulnerable to stress and financial burdens. From all caregivers surveyed in 2009, three in ten caregivers consider their caregiving to be highly stressful, and 15% had a high degree in financial hardship. While majority of all caregivers experienced no impact on their health while providing care, 17% felt their health was made worse as a result of caregiving.
