Honolulu (October 28, 2014) Our islands are vulnerable to natural disasters and emergencies can happen at anytime. When a major disaster occurs, our community and family's lives can change in an instant. When natural disasters, such as floods, fires, earthquakes, hurricanes, and tsunamis strike, they affect thousands of people every year. In support of our Kupuna, Attention Plus Care will host a free Emergency Preparedness Seminar, themed "Are You Prepared" at the Moiliili Senior Center from 8:30am-10:30am. There will also be a special presentation by Wendy Gibson from the American Red Cross, Hawaii Chapter. National Falls Awareness Day on September 23, 2014

HONOLULU (September 19, 2014) - Falls are a serious health risk to our seniors and are the leading cause of injury related death among older adults. They are also the most common cause of nonfatal injuries seen in emergency departments. In support of our Kupuna, and in observance of National Falls Awareness Day on September 23, 2014 Attention Plus Care will host a free Falls Prevention Seminar at the Moiliili Senior Center from 8:30am - 10:30am. Attendees will learn more about the risks for falls, simple prevention, and safety to support more independence.

There will also be a special appearance by Senator Brickwood Galuteria, host of Kupuna Power, an Olelo program that focuses on issues important to our senior community, and Kupuna Power Day at the State Capitol, which seeks to empower seniors with information.

Eileen Phillips, RN and Client Service Director for Attention Plus Care will lead the seminar. "Those of us working with this population in Hawaii know they are at risk for falls. Two factors make this a huge issue for Hawaii's future - longer life spans and aging baby boomers. As our Kupuna age in place, their risk of falling and potential for serious injury increases. We are hoping to get this message out to everyone who attends this seminar" said Phillips.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, falls among adults 65 and over are not only common, but death rates have risen sharply over the last decade. The CDC reports one-in-three older adults will sustain a fall that can lead to a serious injury, and even death. Even falls with minor injuries can seriously affect the quality of life for seniors by inducing fear of falling, which can lead to social isolation and depression. Data shows that in 2011, Hawaii averaged 1,990 hospitalizations each year due to falls, and over 5,770 emergency room visits.

Attention Plus Care Pays Tribute to Caregiver of the Year!

Honolulu (November 1, 2013) -- November is National Home Care & Hospice Month, and Attention Plus Care will pay tribute to the caregivers company-wide for the profound difference they make in their clients' lives. Additionally, the company will recognize Mr. Narciso Cardenas (a.k.a., Narcy), Home Health Aide of Attention Plus Care with the Caregiver of the Year award. Cardenas was selected because of his exceptional work performance and extraordinary client care.

"Narcy is compassionate, patient, and kind" said Andrea McIntosh, BS, Staffing and Development Manager of Attention Plus Care. "As a caregiver, he looks beyond the challenges of care, and instead shares the moments of joy and empathy. Due to his work ethics and character, Attention Plus Care is proud to award Narcy as the Caregiver of the Year, to serve as an inspiration to all caregivers on how they make a difference in the lives of others."

Home Health Aides play an important role in assisting their clients to maintain their activities of daily living; such as personal care, meals, running errands, going to the doctor's office, or assisting them with medical conditions. As well as, companionship and emotional support.

"During the time Narcy cared for my husband, he went well beyond the requirements of the job," said Patricia Curtis, former client. "He got to know my husband as a person and showed a true interest in his life history and his family. He took the time to learn of my husband's interests in reading the newspaper and watching baseball and cowboy movies on television, and made sure my husband got to enjoy television and the newspaper as part of his daily routine.

"Narcy always was extremely respectful in his treatment of my husband. They communicated well together which was not an easy task, since my husband suffered from Alzheimer's disease. When my husband became agitated due to the effects of the disease, Narcy always treated him with patience and understanding, and calmed him down with gentle movements and words. Narcy would hold his hand, talk with Howard and keep him comfortable as his final days drew near. My family and I felt that we were all blessed to have Narcy as our caregiver."

Prior to entering his career as a caregiver, Narcy received a Bachelor of Arts in Computer Science and worked in job roles such as, Lead Senior Computer Operator, and Financial Representative. Cardenas became a Certified Nursing Assistant in 2008, and has over six years of caregiving experience. "Helping people is the most rewarding job I've ever had," said Cardenas. "To see my clients' smile or their body language responding to my care, I get a feeling of how grateful they are."

Eileen Phillips, RN, Client Service Director of Attention Plus Care will lead the seminar. "Far too many seniors are injured each year in Hawai'i as a result of falling. As people age, their risk of falling increases significantly, threatening their independence and quality of life," Phillips said. As a leading cause of injuries among people 65 and older, falls have a substantial impact on the lives of our kupuna, their families, and communities. The most recent data show that in 2011, Hawai'i averages 1,990 hospitalizations each year due to falls, and over 5,770 emergency department visits.

Falls are a growing concern statewide, and Hawai'i has launched 2013-2018 Hawai'i Falls Prevention State Plan. The State Plan identifies fall risk factors, local and national statistics, and four foundations that are evidence-based interventions to prevent falls: 1) Physical Activity, 2) Medication Management, 3) Vision Checks, and 4) Home Modifications. This seminar is the first educational awareness campaign built on the four foundations from this strategic plan.

Tai Chi, Moving for Better Balance is one of the evidenced-based programs to prevent falls. Jerry Punzal, a certified instructor, will lead the session. "Moving for Better Balance is a safe and effective way for older adults to maintain and in many cases improve in areas of strength, endurance, coordination, range of motion, and balance. It focuses on postural alignment, body awareness, and relaxation while doing slow gentle movements," said Punzal.

Aging in Hawai'i is an educational outreach program sponsored by Attention Plus Care, with the mission to provide resources for seniors and their families. Classes are instructed by a Registered Nurse, with a different topic each month. Attention Plus Care and The Queen's Medical Center are co-hosting this event.
